This Heating Season Feels Different

Written on: October 1, 2026 by Paul J. Nazzaro

For those of us who have spent our careers in this business, these rituals never really change. They are part of the fabric of our industry and a reminder that, despite advances in technology and changing energy policies, our mission remains remarkably simple: keep families warm, comfortable and safe.

Yet as I prepare for another heating season, I can’t help but feel that this year is different.

That feeling has little to do with weather forecasts or wholesale fuel prices. Instead, it comes from the unique vantage point I’ve been fortunate to experience over the past three decades. My work has allowed me to spend time with virtually every segment of the liquid fuels supply chain—from soybean growers and biodiesel producers to refiners, terminal operators, railroads, additive manufacturers, equipment manufacturers, wholesalers, dealers, technicians and the organizations that represent them. While each views the market through a different lens, I’m hearing something today that I haven’t heard before.

There is a growing sense of confidence. Not overconfidence, nor complacency, but confidence born from years of hard work, collaboration and persistence. It is the confidence that comes from knowing our industry has continually adapted to changing customer expectations, evolving environmental goals and increasingly complex fuel specifications without ever losing sight of the people we ultimately serve.

Looking back, it’s remarkable how much has changed in a relatively short period of time. Twenty years ago, many of the conversations surrounding biodiesel and Bioheat® fuel centered on uncertainty. Could higher blends perform reliably through a Northeast Winter? Would storage terminals adapt? Would service technicians embrace the technology? Would homeowners accept a renewable component in their heating fuel? Those were legitimate questions, and our industry answered them the only way it knows how—through research, testing, education, investment and an unwavering commitment to getting it right.

Today, those conversations have largely disappeared. That’s not because the work is finished, but because the work has produced results.

Millions of gallons of Bioheat® fuel are now delivered every year with confidence. Equipment manufacturers have expanded blend approvals. ASTM International fuel specifications have evolved alongside advances in additive technology and fuel quality management. Organizations such as the National Oilheat Research Alliance (NORA) and the National Energy & Fuels Institute (NEFI), numerous State associations, manufacturers, fuel suppliers and countless individual companies have invested years building the technical foundation that supports the product we deliver today. These accomplishments didn’t happen because any single organization carried the load. They happened because an entire industry chose to innovate rather than remain satisfied with yesterday’s solutions.

Success Creates New Expectations
For years, we devoted tremendous energy to proving that Bioheat® fuel worked. Today, most homeowners simply expect it to work. That’s one of the greatest compliments our industry could ever receive. The renewable component has quietly become part of the dependable service our customers have come to expect. Many never think about the remarkable amount of collaboration, engineering, testing, logistics and planning required to make that possible—and frankly, they shouldn’t have to. Success often becomes invisible.

What should not become invisible, however, is the opportunity standing before us.

Recent developments in renewable fuel policy, increased domestic biodiesel production and stronger long-term market signals have created momentum that few of us could have imagined even several years ago. While public policy will always evolve, the broader direction is becoming increasingly clear. Renewable liquid fuels are earning their place within the U.S.’s evolving energy portfolio, and our industry has positioned itself to benefit because we chose to prepare long before many others recognized the opportunity.

That preparation extends well beyond the fuel itself.

One lesson I’ve learned from spending time across the supply chain is that markets are built through collaboration, not coincidence. Behind every gallon delivered to a homeowner stands a remarkably interconnected network of farmers, fuel producers, railroads, marine transportation providers, storage terminals, wholesalers, additive suppliers, service organizations, equipment manufacturers and local family-owned heating companies. Every improvement made by one segment ultimately strengthens the entire system.

I’ve witnessed that collaboration become stronger than ever before. Companies that once worked largely within their own spheres are now sharing ideas, solving logistical challenges together, investing in infrastructure and planning further ahead than ever before. Those relationships may ultimately become one of our industry’s greatest competitive advantages.

The same can be said for the relationships we continue building with our customers. If you were to ask homeowners why they remain loyal to their heating company, very few would begin by discussing fuel specifications or renewable content. They would talk about trust. They would remember the technician who restored heat during a January snowstorm, the customer service representative who answered the phone when help was needed most or the delivery driver who ensured an elderly customer never ran out of fuel during dangerous weather conditions.

Our business has always been about people. Bioheat® fuel simply gives us an even stronger story to tell. For the first time in our industry’s history, we can confidently tell homeowners they don’t have to choose between comfort, reliability, affordability and environmental responsibility. They can have all four. That is an extraordinary value proposition, yet I sometimes wonder whether we tell that story often enough. Too frequently we allow conversations to revolve around commodity prices when the true value of our businesses extends far beyond the cost of a gallon of fuel.

Perhaps that’s what makes this heating season feel different to me. For the first time in many years, I believe our industry is positioned to play offense instead of defense.

Instead of explaining why renewable liquid fuels deserve consideration, we can demonstrate decades of successful real-world performance. Instead of defending our infrastructure, we can showcase one of the most efficient residential energy delivery systems in the country. Instead of reacting to change, we have an opportunity to help shape it. That’s an exciting place to be.

Looking to the Future
None of this suggests our work is finished. Markets will continue evolving, new technologies will emerge, consumer expectations will change and public policy will undoubtedly shift over time. Those realities accompany every successful industry.

What gives me optimism is something much more enduring. Our industry’s willingness to adapt has never been stronger. Its technical capabilities have never been greater, its partnerships have never been broader and its story has never been more compelling.

As another heating season begins, I encourage each of us to pause—not for long, because Winter never waits—long enough to recognize what we’ve accomplished together. Through innovation, collaboration and an unwavering commitment to serving our customers, we’ve transformed our product, strengthened our industry, and positioned ourselves for opportunities that once seemed beyond reach.

Every September marks the beginning of another heating season. This one, however, feels like the beginning of something even larger. Let’s make the most of it. ICM
