As heating and HVAC systems continue to evolve, the demands placed on service technicians are increasing rapidly. Modern equipment incorporates advanced controls, sophisticated combustion systems, multiple comfort technologies, and increasingly stringent efficiency requirements. To help technicians keep pace with those changes, the National Oilheat Research Alliance (NORA) has introduced a series of new field service tools while expanding access to its advanced technical training materials through a partnership with the ESCO Institute.
This initiative reflects NORA’s ongoing commitment to workforce development and technician education, providing practical resources that support both experienced service professionals and the next generation of home comfort technicians.
Practical Tools for the Field
Among the latest additions is NORA’s new Combustion Analysis Reference Chart, a field-ready resource designed to help technicians interpret combustion test results and determine appropriate corrective actions. The chart covers the key measurements technicians rely upon during equipment setup and service, including oxygen (O2), carbon dioxide (CO2), excess air, draft, stack temperature, smoke number, and carbon monoxide.
Rather than simply presenting acceptable ranges, the chart provides guidance on what abnormal readings may indicate and outlines possible adjustments and corrective measures. Available in both printable and mobile-friendly formats, the resource is intended to serve as a quick-reference guide that technicians can access while performing service calls.
NORA has also introduced an Oil Burner Tune-Up Flow Chart that outlines a complete preventive maintenance procedure. Beginning with customer interviews and visual inspections, the chart walks technicians through each step of annual service, including component replacement, system cleaning, combustion analysis, safety testing, and final documentation.
The visual format was developed to encourage consistency and ensure that important maintenance steps are not overlooked. It also serves as a valuable training aid for newer technicians learning proper service procedures.
“These tools were developed to provide technicians with practical guidance they can use every day,” said Robert O’Brien, NORA Director of Education.
“Whether they’re troubleshooting a system or performing annual maintenance, technicians need resources that are easy to access and simple to apply in the field.”

Bridging Classroom Learning & Real-World Application
While classroom instruction and certification provide the foundation, field service often requires technicians to apply those concepts under real-world conditions.
NORA’s latest additions are intended to bridge that gap, reinforcing technical principles while providing practical support during day-to-day service work.
According to O’Brien, technicians today are expected to understand far more than a single appliance.
“Modern service professionals need to understand airflow, combustion, electrical systems, controls, hydronics, and overall system performance,” he explained.
“The home comfort industry has become increasingly integrated, and technicians need resources that help them see the entire system rather than just individual components.”
Advanced Series Manuals Available Through ESCO
To further expand access to technical education, NORA has partnered with the ESCO Institute to distribute five of its Advanced Series training manuals through the ESCO bookstore.
The Advanced Series publications were developed for experienced technicians seeking deeper knowledge in critical areas of system performance and diagnostics. Subjects include airflow fundamentals, combustion analysis, electrical troubleshooting, hydronics, and system efficiency.
Unlike introductory training materials, the Advanced Series focuses on helping technicians understand why systems behave the way they do. The manuals explore cause-and-effect relationships and emphasize diagnostic thinking rather than simple component replacement.
That approach reflects an industry trend towards higher levels of technical expertise. As heating and cooling systems become more efficient and interconnected, successful troubleshooting increasingly requires an understanding of how multiple systems interact.
“Technicians today need to think like system analysts,” said O’Brien.
“You can’t simply replace a part and assume the problem is solved. Understanding airflow, combustion, controls, and heat transfer is essential to diagnosing problems correctly and optimizing performance.”
In addition to offering the Advanced Series manuals, ESCO will distribute NORA’s new service tools in both printed and digital formats. The expanded partnership allows NORA resources to reach a broader audience of contractors, instructors, vocational schools, and training organizations.
The manuals and service tools are also available through Learning.NORAweb.org, NORA’s online education platform. The site provides convenient access to digital resources that can be incorporated into classroom instruction, self-paced learning, and field training programs. The availability of materials through multiple channels reflects changing learning preferences within the workforce. While some technicians prefer printed manuals, others rely heavily on mobile devices and digital references. Providing resources in various formats helps ensure that technicians can access information whenever and wherever they need it.
The collaboration with ESCO also builds upon a shared commitment to technician education. Both organizations have long focused on workforce development and recognize the importance of providing high-quality educational materials that support long-term career growth.

Supporting Workforce Development
The introduction of new field tools and expanded educational access represents another step in NORA’s broader workforce development strategy.
Over the past several years, NORA has invested heavily in technician education through certification programs, online learning, training manuals, technical videos, and partnerships with vocational schools and state associations. Programs such as Bronze, Silver, and Gold technician certification have helped establish clear pathways for career advancement while promoting consistent technical standards across the industry.
NORA has also expanded instructor training through its Accredited Instructor Program and has worked with schools and training organizations to provide modern curriculum materials that reflect current technologies and service practices. These efforts are intended to help attract and retain a skilled workforce capable of meeting the industry’s changing needs.
The goal is not simply to train technicians, but to provide ongoing support throughout their careers.
“Education doesn’t end when a technician leaves the classroom,” O’Brien noted.
“Learning continues every day in the field. Our objective is to provide resources that technicians can rely on throughout their careers, whether they are new to the industry or have decades of experience.”
The combination of NORA’s new field service tools and expanded access to Advanced Series manuals through.escogroup.org/shop and Learning.NORAweb.org provides technicians with a comprehensive support system that bridges classroom learning and real-world application.
By investing in practical tools and advanced education, NORA continues to strengthen the workforce that keeps millions of homes comfortable each year. As technology continues to evolve, those resources will help ensure that technicians remain prepared to meet the challenges—and opportunities—of an increasingly sophisticated home comfort industry.
