Summit Natural Gas of Maine plans to extend its service territory into Maine’s Midcoast region through a $90 million investment and create 100 new jobs. Targeting Knox and Waldo Counties, natural gas will be available to residential and commercial customers in communities along the Route 1 corridor including, Belfast, Camden, Rockland, Rockport and Thomaston for home heating.
Summit also estimates the company will reduce emissions by 263,000 metric tons, which is equivalent to taking 57,000 cars off the road, during the first five years of the project. To ease conversion costs from oil for customers, Summit will also offer rebates of up to $3,300 for residential and $6,600 for commercial customers.
The project is expected to break ground in Fall 2021 with gas service for customers starting in late 2022.
