From New England to the Upper Midwest, from lake-effect corridors to rural back roads, fuel dealers and their teams operated in conditions that demanded more than technical skill. This Winter required grit, judgment, stamina and resolve. It demanded early mornings that blended into late nights, trucks rolling when most people were sheltering indoors and decisions made under pressure where the margin for error was razor thin. What often goes unseen is the toll that kind of commitment takes.
This was not just a test of infrastructure or logistics; it was a test of human endurance. Some of the fuel dealers with whom we spoke in late January and early February were genuinely concerned about their employees’ mental health while physical exhaustion became routine. Mental fatigue was constant and challenged the most committed fuel dealer. Dispatchers, drivers, technicians, managers and owners carried the weight of knowing that a delayed delivery or service call wasn’t an inconvenience, it was a risk to safety, comfort and health. The emotional burden of that responsibility is real, and this Winter made it unmistakably clear that mental toughness and emotional resilience are as critical to our industry as tanks, terminals and transport. Still, the work got done.
Fuel flowed. Homes stayed warm. Hospitals, schools, senior housing and critical facilities remained operational. When roads closed, routes were rerouted. When equipment failed, it was repaired or replaced. When plans fell apart, new ones were established—often on the fly. This was professionalism under pressure, and it deserves to be acknowledged.
What makes this moment especially meaningful is that it comes during a period of transformation for the liquid fuels industry. Fuel dealers are not just preserving a legacy, they are actively shaping the future. The same gold standard fuel dealers and leaders who fought through this Winter are the ones investing in modernization, sustainability and innovation—ensuring that the essential service they provide remains viable and competitive in the decades ahead.
That future is brighter than many outside the industry realize. Today, fuel dealers have access to a solution that aligns compassion with ambition, reliability with responsibility. Bioheat® fuel represents that next chapter. It is a fuel built for the 21st Century—one that delivers the performance required in extreme conditions while reducing carbon intensity and supporting domestic agriculture and energy security. It works with existing infrastructure. It performs in real-world Winter conditions and allows dealers to lead, rather than react, as energy conversations evolve.
In early February, it was brought to my attention that several dealers in a mandated blend market asked for a temporary hold to be placed on the State’s biodiesel blending mandate. They, like many other fuel dealers, were fatigued and challenged to keep up with the demand placed upon them.
Apparently, those fuel dealers felt that getting their State leadership to place the mandate aside would help them be more responsive to their customers. One specific fuel dealer felt Bioheat® fuel simply was non-essential to their success; more so, a hindrance. I reminded the State leader representing these few fuel dealers that if our industry hadn’t had access to the pathway to decarbonize, those same dealers would have endured the same challenges extreme weather brings, and worse, had no long-term future to maintain the business with conventional fuel.

Bioheat® is not a theory. It is being delivered, stored, blended and leveraged by the same professionals who proved that they can be trusted when conditions are at their worst. There is something powerful about that combination: unwavering commitment paired with forward-looking progress.
Fuel dealers are often described as resilient, but this Winter showed something deeper. It showed compassion—concern for customers, communities and employees. It showed leadership—calm decision-making under stress, accountability without excuses and a willingness to carry responsibility so others didn’t have to. Lastly, it showed ambition—not the loud kind, but the steady, disciplined ambition to do better, operate smarter and prepare for what’s next.
This industry doesn’t pause when things get hard. It adapts. It absorbs pressure. It finds solutions. That mindset is exactly why liquid fuels—and renewable options like Bioheat® fuel—will continue to play a vital role in the energy landscape.
As Spring approaches and the worst of Winter fades into memory, this is a moment to reflect with pride—pride in teams that pushed through exhaustion, in leaders who put people first and in an industry that quietly, consistently delivers when it matters most.
To every fuel dealer across the Northern States: What you accomplished this Winter mattered. Your effort kept families safe, businesses open and communities functioning. Your resilience carried people through the coldest days, and your willingness to evolve ensured that the service you provide will remain strong, relevant and respected well into the future.
The cold was relentless—but so were you. Thank you for your service. ICM
