When Dominic Falcone, the Service Manager at Westmore Fuel—a third-generation family-owned heating oil and heating service company that serves New York and Connecticut—visited a customer’s home in Greenwich, CT, to craft a proposal for a new heating equipment installation, he had no idea he would be embarking on one of his biggest and lengthiest projects since he joined the company in the summer of 2020. It was a complex job that required a team of seven installers and critical manufacturer support to complete.

“The customer had a natural draft boiler with an indirect hot water heater system,” noted Falcone.
“He wasn’t having any problems with it, but he was passionate about lowering his fuel consumption and saving energy. He trusted us to deliver on what he was looking for.”
Falcone explained that in a situation like that, he usually begins by recommending the Energy Kinetics System 2000 boiler.
“It’s one of our highest sellers because we can guarantee long-term annual energy savings of up to 40%,” he stated.
However, a new high-efficiency boiler was only part of the picture. After being presented with multiple installation options, the customer finally agreed that he was most comfortable going forward with a proposal to install an Energy Kinetics twinned boiler with lead/lag system (Tekmar control) and a radiant buffer tank with a direct hot water heater storage tank.
“The customer committed to a project of this scope because we promised he was going to see an impressive ROI within a certain time frame,” shared Falcone.
“Kudos to Energy Kinetics for their input and helping us arrive at this innovative solution.”
The Energy Kinetics twinned boiler system with lead/lag control is designed to maximize efficiency and minimize energy consumption by having multiple boilers operating in a coordinated fashion based on the real-time heating demand. It was a good solution for this particular home because the residence had multiple zones.
“When there is a call for heat, the lead-lag controls designate one boiler as the lead boiler, which starts up first to meet the initial demand. However, if demand exceeds the capacity of the lead boiler, the Tekmar control activates the second lag boiler to provide the necessary additional heating capacity,” explained Falcone.

He further noted that a low mass system, such as the System 2000 boiler, injects heat specifically where it’s needed in a home; it is an application that reduces energy, lowers emissions and saves on fuel and electricity costs. According to Falcone, Energy Kinetics pioneered low-mass technology with thermal purge, which essentially uses heat to remove moisture or unburnt fuel from a system.
“That puts energy remaining in the boiler to work heating a home. There’s no energy left wasted in the boiler, and that’s why we can guarantee our customers such an impressive ROI when they agree to our recommendation for a System 2000 boiler,” he said.
As far as incorporating a radiant buffer tank with a direct hot water heater storage tank as the final component of the installation, Roger Marran, President of Energy Kinetics, explained, “Energy Kinetics’ tanks are specially engineered and optimized to take advantage of thermal purge with the plate heat exchanger.

“That arrangement can save up to 10% off an annual fuel bill versus a conventional indirect water tank with coil, as the boiler can thermal purge and recover the heat left in the boiler; coil type tanks can’t because the coil is hot in the middle of the tank,” Marran added.

The bottom line, according to Falcone, is that powerful outcomes can be achieved when an efficiency-oriented heating fuel company uses its expertise to install advanced high-efficiency equipment. That’s one sure way to build trust among your customer base. ICM
