CONWAY, NH — Bratwurst lovers turned out in force for the Saunders family and staff’s 35th annual White Mountain Oil and Propane Bratwurst Broil and Open House, held under sunny skies last Friday, June 10, though rain has never forced a cancellation.
“It has rained once or twice, but not so hard that we have ever had to cancel,” said marketing and sales director Dana Jones as staff manned the grills in front and in back of the store, located at 2820 White Mountain Highway in North Conway.
Attendees included local weather observer Briggs Bunker and wife, Bobbi Bunker, of North Conway; David L. Eastman of Tamworth of Country Ecology radio and newspaper column fame; Conway Public Library Trustee Mark Hounsell; and local artists Robert Gordon and Bill Fein.
As many are aware, Bunker rates each day’s weather on local radio station WMWV 93.5-FM on a scale of 5 cents to 50 cents. It carries on a tradition started by former station owner Joan Sherman and late former weather observer Joe Dodge, once huts manager for the Appalachian Mountain Club and a former Conway selectman.
Bunker gave Friday a 40-cent rating due to wind, but many attendees opined that any day one can enjoy the company’s bratwurst is a 50-center.
The event has served as a community get-together and opportunity for socializing while enjoying the Austrian bratwurst recipe of Sonni Saunders, wife of company President Glenn Saunders and a native of Austria.
The company was founded by Glenn’s parents, Ethel and the late Ben Saunders. Glenn and his late brother Scott continued the family business, and now Sonni and Glenn’s sons, Kirk and Mark, serve as vice presidents.
The company is an energy retailer serving northern New Hampshire and western Maine for three generations. White Mountain Oil and Propane delivers fuel oil products, propane gas, as well as heating service and installation.
